HOLD UP IT’S TIME FOR A LIZARD LADY

MMLM: DAY 19: MELATI KUSUMA A.K.A. “KOMODO”

Gosh I love lizards and superheroes and smart pretty ladies. But what am I do to? Lizard characters are usually villainous older men! Thankfully, Avengers: The Intiative fulfills my need for the heroic lizard lady lovin’.

Melati Kusuma is an Initiative recruit with a very unusual backstory. An otherwise unassuming, good kid, late one night she got in a horrific car accident that led to the double-amputation of both legs. Despondent and with nothing to do but study for college, she worked as an assistant for Curt Conners, A.K.A. the Lizard. Eventually, working with him on his lizard serum, she managed to perfect the formula to her DNA, and when tested on herself, she regrew her legs and could walk again — as well as being green and lizard-y.  Conners was like, “This is impressive but I wanna make sure you don’t go crazy villain” and so she signed up for the Initiative, and we get to read about her! Yay!

Melati grows and changes a lot throughout the Initiative. Initially coming off as rather gruff and self-centered, this is partially covering up how uncomfortable and insecure she feels outside of her lizard form, and anything that threatens to take away her powers — which, in the Initiative, is a lot — practically paralyzes her at first, afraid of having to just be Melati and not be able to walk anymore. As she gets more training, fights alongside and makes allies and friends with other recruits, and has to corral a moronic ex-boyfriend who joined HYDRA, it culminates into a deeply meaningful scene: After  Norman Osborn takes over the Initiative and fills it with criminals(including said ex-boyfriend), she refuses to work for the corrupt Initiative anymore and willingly gives up her powers and legs. She helps the New Warriors/Avengers Resistance as a techie person who is pretty handy with computers for a bit, and eventually gets her powers restored.

She hasn’t shown up in any really meaningful capacity since the end of Initiative, unfortunately, just a few cameos as Random Youth Character #34345. I wait with baited breath until more of this lovely, intelligent lizard lady with strong convictions once more graces my comic pages.

Until then, I recommend you all read Avengers: the Initiative(2007), #1-35, and the Avengers: the Initiative Special Featuring Reptil.

That time a depowered Dani Moonstar became a mentor for a fear-powered half demon by knocking him on his ass with a stranglehold.

Here at Camp Hammond, you’ll be put through Avengers basic training. That includes combat, first aid, and superhuman ethics. Once you pass, your Superhuman Registration Card will be upgraded to a full Hero’s Licence.

Um, Sir? What happens if we don’t pass?

Trauma vs. the Hulk.

[from The Initiative (2007) #5]

I can’t believe Trauma thought turning into Bruce’s father was good idea.

Yeah, Terry’s not that great at the whole fighting superheroes business…

There was a post in his tracked tag and that never happens ever so I celebrated by drawing him getting his butt kicked.
